From the outside, it can look like endless calls, constant rejection, and impossible targets. But the truth is far more nuanced. In this post, I’m taking you inside the nesting phase – the moment when training ends and the raw reality of the sales floor begins. Here’s what it really feels like, what I learned, and why it’s worth every challenge.

“Travel sales? That job isn’t worth it.”
I’ve heard that before. Maybe you’ve thought it too. From the outside, it looks like endless dials, rejected calls, and targets that make no sense. But let me take you inside the nesting phase, the moment the cozy blanket of training ended and the raw reality of live client interactions began.

The Shock of the Queue

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But I definitely wasn’t ready for this: an unending queue of bonus leads. One hundred a day. Cold calls, voicemail after voicemail, silence on repeat. At first, I wondered if this was a prank. Was I really supposed to work through 100 leads? In a day?

Some days I dialed back-to-back and thought, What am I even doing? Is this real work? Then suddenly, someone answered. And I froze. After so many voicemails, I had almost forgotten how to talk to a real client. My tongue tripped, my brain scrambled. That’s when I learned: training scripts don’t cure nerves. Only doing it, fumbling, and finding your voice does.

“But People Were Closing Deals!”

Here’s the kicker. While many of us were struggling, confused, and borderline panicking, some people were actually closing deals. Same queue. Same challenges. Different results.

How?! That question ate at me. I could have sulked, complained about the leads, or even given up. Instead, I made a choice, I asked. I studied those getting strong results. I made friends with them. And yes, I troubled them with questions. Their answers weren’t magic formulas. They were strategies, discipline, and mindset shifts that changed how I approached my calls.

Shout Outs to Real Ones

And let me pause here. Because I wouldn’t have made it this far without two real ones my amazing nesting supervisor, Gates, and my mentor, Fortune. I disturbed them endlessly: “Can we go over this script again?”, “What should I have said here?”, “How do I sound more confident?” They never turned me away. They guided me, encouraged me, and sometimes gave me the tough love I needed.

It wasn’t easy for them to babysit a rookie like me, but they did. And those countless sessions? They built me.

Why It’s Worth It

So when someone shrugs and says, “This path isn’t worth it,” here’s my answer:

It’s not glamorous at first. It’s gritty.

It’s not instant success. It’s falling flat and getting back up, again and again.

It’s not about easy goals. It’s about impossible-looking ones that stretch you until you realize, you can do it.

Nesting gave me more than calls and commissions. It gave me resilience. It taught me resourcefulness. It showed me that consistency beats talent when talent refuses to show up.

Was it easy? No. Was it worth it? Absolutely.

Because behind every voicemail is a client waiting. Behind every “no” is the skill to handle the next “yes.” And behind every tough day is the proof that growth doesn’t come wrapped in comfort, it comes disguised as challenge.

So, to anyone doubting this role: it’s not for the faint of heart, but if you give it your best, it will give back. And trust me, the rewards are real.
